To realize a full-scale hydrogen society, as typified by fuel cell vehicles, stationary-type fuel cells, and power generation by hydrogen gas turbines, it is necessary to achieve a stable supply of CO2-free hydrogen in metropolitan areas where demand is high. High dependence on natural conditions is one of the issues when it comes to utilizing renewable energy. Toshiba solves these issues by providing solutions based on the supply of CO2-free hydrogen produced from renewable energy.

Bridging the demand-supply gap of renewable energy

Using excess electricity effectively

In a grid connection, we have to deal with fluctuations in supply and demand due to climate, time of day, and seasonal conditions. By using excess electricity from renewable sources to produce and store hydrogen, we can convert our excess energy into a more effective form.

Realizing peak shift/reduction in power systems

By establishing Toshiba's hydrogen supply chain near a renewable power facility, you can convert the excess electricity that cannot be transmitted via a power system into hydrogen, thereby turning excess electricity to useful energy. This enables us to maintain the grid without needing to reinforce the system network to meet the power maximum demand.

Towards the realization of a hydrogen society

The energy supply from renewable resources tends to have large peaks and troughs, so the ability to convert the excess energy during times of high supply into hydrogen is invaluable. And this is where Toshiba's technologies in the areas of power systems, hydrogen, renewable energy, and energy management systems (EMS) come into their own. Toshiba's ultimate goal is for these systems to be optimally integrated into the energy infrastructure to provide a stable supply of hydrogen in locations with high demand throughout the year--thus achieving a CO2-free hydrogen supply chain.
