・The world’s most efficient combined-cycle power plant , Nishi-Nagoya Thermal Power Station No. 7-1, pushes thermal efficiency to 63.08%*
・Cuts LNG consumption, reduces CO2 emissions

Nagoya and Kawasaki, Japan—Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. (Chubu Electric Power) and Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (Toshiba ESS) are pleased to announce that Nishi-Nagoya Thermal Power Station No. 7-1 has been recognized by GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS** as a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the world’s most efficient combined-cycle power plant. The awarding ceremony was held in Nagoya today.

Alongside safety and reliable power supply, power companies the world over are obsessed by the same thing—pushing power plant thermal efficiency to the maximum. That’s the way to reduce fuel consumption while boosting output, and to cut emissions of carbon dioxide. At Nishi-Nagoya Thermal Power Station No. 7-1 Chubu Electric Power and Toshiba ESS have succeeded in setting a new standard by achieving a demonstrated efficiency of 63.08%.

Commenting on the record, Satoru Katsuno, President & Director of Chubu Electric Power said, “To support manufacturing by providing a stable and inexpensive power supply in Chubu, Japan’s central region, we have been making unremitting efforts to construct power generation facilities that achieve the world's highest levels of output and efficiency. We believe that our constant quest for innovation led to this GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS achievement.”

“We are very proud to have contributed to this historic achievement,” said Satoshi Tsunakawa, President & CEO of Toshiba Corporation. “As EPC contractor for the plant, we worked really closely with Chubu Electric Power toward reaching this goal, and to deliver excellent technologies and systems that pushed the plant’s efficiency beyond 63%. This success is an inspiration, and Toshiba ESS will continue redoubled efforts to realize a low-carbon society and stable electricity supply.”

Nishi-Nagoya Thermal Power Station started operation in 1970. As the facilities aged, Chubu Electric Power tore down units No.1 to No.6, and constructed the new high efficiency, multi-shaft combined-cycle power generation unit No.7 to secure stable supply while reducing CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. As EPC contractor, responsible for execution of the project, Toshiba ESS combined General Electric’s HA gas turbines with Toshiba ESS’s high-efficiency steam turbine and generator, and achieved optimal overall plant system design in unit No.7-1. Unit No.7-2 is now complete and about to start commercial operation.

* Low heating value base, which excludes the evaporation heat of water vapor generated by fuel combustion.
