Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation

Kawasaki, Japan — Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (hereinafter Toshiba ESS) today announced that the four-party consortium of Toshiba ESS, IHI Corporation, CTCI Corporation and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has won an EPC contract from Van Phong Power Company Limited (hereinafter VPCL), a Vietnamese company invested in by Sumitomo Corporation, and has started construction work for the Van Phong 1 Coal-Fired Power Plant in Vietnam. Toshiba ESS will be in charge of the design, manufacturing, installation and test operation for the stream turbines and generators (STGs) used in the project. The plant is scheduled to start commercial operation by the end of 2023.

The power station that VPCL will build, own and transfer is a coal-fired power plant located in the Van Phong Special Economic Zone, Khánh Hòa Province in the southern part of Vietnam with a generation capacity of 1,320 MW (two units of 660 MW). The electricity generated from this plant will be sold to Vietnam Electricity (EVN), the country’s state-owned utility, over a period of 25 years.

Vietnam’s energy demand has risen sharply in line with its economic growth, and the power supply is getting tight especially in the southern region. To respond to the situation, the Vietnamese government aims to increase the country’s total power generation capacity of its power plants to approx. 129,500 MW in 2030 according to the Revised National Power Development Master Plan for the 2011-2020 period with the vision to 2030 issued in 2016. Once built, the Van Phong-1 Coal-Fired Power Plant will increase power generation at an amount equivalent to approx. 3% of the current total installed capacity of the country: 48,573 MW.*

In Vietnam, Toshiba ESS has supplied eight sets of STGs for thermal power plants, such as Vung Ang 1, Thai Binh 2, Vinh Tan 4, Duyen Hai 3 and the Vinh Tan 4 Extension Thermal Power Plant. For hydropower plants, ten hydro turbines (total 754 MW) and six hydro generators (total 659 MVA) have been supplied.

Toshiba ESS will continue to bring sustainability to the economy and society by listening to regional needs and will fulfill our responsibilities by helping to overcome challenges the regions face while also respecting the environment.
