Kawasaki, Japan— Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (hereinafter “Toshiba ESS”) today announced that Toshiba Group has won an order to supply two sets of 70 MW hydro-turbines and hydro-generators for the Tanahu Hydropower Plant planned by Tanahu Hydropower Limited, a subsidiary company of Nepal Electricity Authority in Nepal. The order was received from the EPC contractor, PowerChina International Group Limited (hereinafter “POWERCHINA”). Toshiba Hydro Power (Hangzhou) Co., Ltd., a Chinese subsidiary of Toshiba ESS, will manufacture the equipment, and the plant is scheduled to start commercial operation in 2024.

The Tanahu Hydropower Plant is a reservoir-type hydropower plant, capable of producing power even during the dry season, and is set to be built on the Seti River in the Tanahu District, about 150 km west of the capital, Kathmandu. This is a project co-financed by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Asian Development Bank (ADB). The total power output will be around 140 MW, and once completed, it will increase an amount equivalent to 13% of the country’s current total installed capacity, contributing to a stable power supply in the western part of Nepal.

Nepal is abundant in water resources, and hydropower accounts for about 90% of the total installed capacity: 1,075 MW.* However, the country’s power supply capability during the dry season drops to around 60%* of that during the rainy season, which leads to a need for reservoir-type hydropower plants.

This project has been collaboratively promoted by Toshiba Group and POWERCHINA, based on their “strategic cooperation agreement covering areas such as hydro, geothermal and thermal power systems” agreed to at the China-Japan Third-Party Market Cooperation Forum held in Beijing in October 2018.

“Toshiba has supplied three sets of 48 MW hydro-turbines and hydro-generators to the Kaligandaki ‘A’ Hydropower Plant, which started commercial operation in 2002,” Takao Konishi, Director and Senior Vice President of Power Systems Div. at Toshiba ESS commented. “We are proud to be a part of the project, and I’m confident that our reliable technology and the excellent performance of our equipment will contribute further to supplying a clean and reliable source of power in Nepal.”
