Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation

Kawasaki, Japan-Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (hereinafter “Toshiba ESS”) today announced that the National Medical Radiology Research Centre (hereinafter “NMRRC”) has signed a general framework agreement for the implementation of a heavy-ion therapy system for Russia

In Russia, it is considered necessary to raise medical standards and extend the life expectancy of Russian citizens, and the “Eight-Point Cooperation Plan”* has been established between Russia and Japan with “medical care” as one of the eight key points. Therefore, it is thought that the need for cancer treatment devices such as heavy-ion therapy will increase for a long-lived society in the future.

Toshiba ESS has developed a heavy-ion therapy system since our involvement in the design and planning of the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC) owned by the National Institute for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology (QST/NIRS), which began the treatment in 1994. Toshiba ESS delivered the system for HIMAC and the Kanagawa Cancer Center, and has installed it at the Yamagata University Hospital. Outside of Japan, the system is being constructed for the Yonsei University Health System (YUHS) in Korea.

For introducing the heavy-ion therapy system to Russia and for meeting expectations regarding Toshiba ESS’s experience and technology, Toshiba ESS and NMRRC reached an understanding for applying a heavy-ion radiotherapy system for a cancer treatment facility in Russia.

Toshiba ESS will continue to contribute to supplying advanced treatment facilities, such as the heavy-ion therapy system, as an option to provide quality treatment for cancer patients all over the world.

* This plan was proposed from Japan to Russia during Japan-Russia Summit Meeting in May 2016.
