Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation

KAWASAKI, JAPAN―Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (hereinafter “Toshiba ESS”) announce today that Toshiba Hydro Power (Hangzhou) Co., Ltd. (THPC), a Chinese subsidiary that manufactures, sells and maintains hydroelectric equipment, has won a major order to supply four 350MW pumped-storage hydroelectric generator units and various balance-of-plant (BOP) systems to the Ning Hai Pumped-Storage Power Plant from State Grid Xin Yuan Company Limited. (hereinafter “SGXY”) in China. Delivery of the equipment will begin in March 2022.

SGXY is the pumped-storage hydroelectric subsidiary of the major state-owned enterprise State Grid Corporation of China operating in power transmission and distribution and renewable energy. THPC will deliver hydroelectric generator units and BOP for the Ning Hai Pumped-Storage Power Plant, which SGXY is set to build in the coastal province of Zhejiang. The deal is worth between 10 to 20 billion yen.

In 1894, Toshiba Group delivered the first Japanese-made 60kW hydroelectric generator to the Keage Power Station, Japan’s first commercial hydroelectric power plant. Since then, Toshiba Group has delivered a total of over 2,300 hydro turbines worth more than 62GW to over 40 other countries, mainly Asia.

Pumped-storage power generation* is a hydroelectric power generation method that makes it possible to continuously adjust the amount of power generated according to fluctuations in demand. Toshiba Group has a wealth of experience in pumped-storage power plants, including Unit 4 of the Kazunogawa Hydroelectric Power Station, which holds the record for both the world’s highest head and the world’s largest capacity adjustable-speed pumped-storage system. THPC was able to secure the SGXY order thanks to its and Toshiba ESS ’s strong technical capabilities, the high reliability of its equipment, and its good experience in delivering pumped-storage power generation equipment to countries around the world.

Takao Konishi, Director and Senior Vice President at Toshiba ESS said, “Hydropower generation will continue to be an important part of Toshiba ESS’s business and we will continue delivering optimal power generation solutions that are closely aligned with customers’ needs.”

The Chinese government announced last year that it aims to go carbon neutral by 2060. The adoption of environmentally conscious renewable energy sources is expected to continue accelerating in China due to a need to meet the electricity demand generated through urbanization and economic growth. In addition, China’s hydroelectric power generation capacity—which stood at approximately 370 GW as of the end of 2020—is expected to grow to around 470 GW by 2050. ** Demand for pumped-storage power generation is growing particularly fast, as it provides the load balancing capabilities necessary to deal with the rise in renewable energy.

Toshiba Group offers an extensive lineup of hydro turbines and power generation equipment that meet various flow, head height, and output needs. Moving forward, the Group aims to expand its client base by continuing to bring high quality products to China, Southeast Asia, Africa, and other countries/regions around the world.

* A method of power generation that utilizes two reservoirs at different elevations. Using a hydro turbine, water is pumped from the lower reservoir to the higher one when demand for electricity is low and released when demand is high, generating power through a generator motor connected to the hydro turbine.
